Film photography is incredibly rewarding, when you see a great shot on a negative you've developed the buzz is something else.Jason Howe
That’s right, I Shoot Film!
Im always fascinated to see the results from different cameras and glass, especially older film cameras. Experimenting is so much fun and I intend to do a lot of it!
Film cameras must be right up there with some of man’s most beautiful mechanical inventions, I’m not ashamed to admit that I get an extra little buzz from owning a camera that’s visually amazing in its own right. Yes I do photograph my cameras…..
When your film has it’s own fridge you know you’re in trouble. I like to keep the film fridge well stocked with a wide range of B&W and Colour films in all formats. Whilst we have unfortunately lost some films there is still good selection of classic available and even a few new ones!
Shooting film will make you make you a better photographer, period.
For those of us in the Southern Hemisphere you can get film at great prices from – www.ffs.org/
My first film camera was the Yashica Electro 35 GSN, you can pick up a good quality 35mm film camera for just a few dollars and it’s a great way to get started.
Once you’ve seen the detail held in a 35mm negative it’s almost impossible to resist the urge to explore medium format…and on it goes! Each format you explore will bring new experiences and rewards.
You need remarkably litte equipment to start developing your own negatives, it’s relatively inexpensive to get setup up and more importantly it’s great fun. Most of the time!!
Alternatley you could just find yourself a good lab – www.filmsoup.co.nz
I’m going to be sharing the film developing details and the results as I go, good and bad…. You can share your own experiences here too.

For most of us, shooting film still requires an element of “digital” interaction and scanning your film can be very frustrating. My scanning workflow coming soon.
If you’d like to share your own workflow here I’ll be happy to host it for you.
