Yes, I’ve dipped my toe….taken another tentative step towards one of my photographic objectives for 2013.
You can read and study all you like but in the end there really is no substitute for experience and I picked up some valuable experience here. I have a photographic vision for my work in this genre and these are some way from that in terms of a look, for one thing the images are still digital, this time taken on the Leica Monochrom.
If I had to come up with an analogy for this experience it’s very much like a jigsaw puzzle………In formulating my ultimate vision I separated out the border pieces, now as I proceed to gain experience I’m putting those pieces in to place, continuously learning in an effort to complete the border. After that, I’ll begin to fill it in!! It’s clear that in order to complete the puzzle I’m going to need to be very patient.
There is so much more to this entire process than meets the eye, just getting to the stage where your in a position to take a photograph takes no small amount of effort. Now I’d managed to achieve that it was time to confront the first two obstacles!!
No 1 – Being prepared to feel like an idiot……yes thats right. I hate the idea of doing anything I’m not immeadiately good at, possibly a character flaw but regardless of that its something I would have to get over in very quick time.
No 2 - Being comfortable in another persons space can be tricky and it is very much a two way street, it’s easy to see why the best photographs are often achieved when model and photographer are on the same wavelength and completely at ease. In this instance the model is experienced, at ease and completely fulfilling her side of this photographic collaboration. From my side, whilst I’m at ease with the model and confident in my skills with the camera I’m a little nervous about my lack of experience and being able to direct the model.
Here’s were it’s going to be frustrating, I know the look I want to achieve, I know what I like and what looks good but being able to communicate it and make it happen is definitely going to be my biggest challenge.
This shoot was really all about meeting, there were no elaborate plans and the whole thing was relaxed, informal and done quite quickly, time to plan something more specific next time.

As is usual for me I’ve spent some time beating myself up about these images, thinking what I could have done differently, agonising over technical imperfections, you get the picture. In the end I’ve decided that I’m happy with them given my limited experience. As I’ve already said here, it’s important to share my successes and failures in an effort to monitor my progress.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
